Car accident kills cyclist in British Columbia

A serious accident in Richmond has left one bicyclist dead and two others injured, according to police. British Columbia authorities responded to the car accident that claimed the life of a 33-year-old man and sent two others to the hospital in serious conditions. So far, no charges have been filed against the driver involved in the accident.

The accident report is still being constructed, but witnesses reported hearing a loud bang followed by screaming on the morning of Nov. 6. A 19-year-old driver reportedly struck a total of six cyclists, all of them male. There has been no word as to whether the driver was speeding, but there was significant damage done to both the vehicle and several of the bicycles. A 33-year-old man was reported dead at the scene.

Two other individuals suffered serious injuries. A 39-year-old man is listed as being in critical condition, while a 46-year-old Vancouver resident is in serious condition. The other three cyclists involved in the accident reported only minor injuries. The status of the driver involved in the crash is currently unknown. The driver remained on the scene and reportedly cooperated with police.

Regardless of his cooperation, the driver could still face charges for his role in the car accident, depending on the outcome of the investigation conducted by British Columbia authorities. In addition, provincial law allows the family of the deceased man, as well as the other injured cyclists, to file personal injury and/or wrongful death suits against the driver and anyone with ownership interest in his vehicle. Eyewitness testimony and other evidence from the police investigation can be used to support such suits in civil court.
