Car accident in British Columbia leaves 2 dead, 3 injured

Police are still investigating the cause of a single-vehicle accident that killed two people and injured three others the afternoon of Aug. 29 in downtown Vancouver. British Columbia authorities confirmed that a single vehicle was involved in the car accident, which also involved several pedestrians. Charges are not expected to be filed as the driver was among those killed in the crash.

According to the accident report, the driver of a northbound vehicle lost control of his vehicle around 5:30 p.m. The vehicle left the road before striking a tree and a lamp post. The two occupants of the vehicle, a man and a woman who have not been publicly identified by police, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by arriving medical personnel.

Three pedestrians were struck by debris and by a tree, which fell after being struck. Two of those three individuals were still in the hospital that evening, suffering from serious injuries. The condition of the third individual is not known at this time, but it appears he or she was released from the hospital, indicating non-threatening injuries. Police have not fully determined what caused the crash, but they believe speed was likely a factor.

If this is the case and the driver of the car can be proved to have been driving recklessly at the time of the car accident, British Columbia law may allow the family of the passenger and the injured parties to take legal action. Wrongful death and personal injury suits can be filed against the driver's estate in civil court. No criminal charges are required to do this, but evidence that the driver contributed materially to the crash would help prove the case in court.
