British Columbia man facing lawsuit over car accident

A man who stands accused of causing a fatal crash that claimed the life of an RCMP officer in April is now facing a civil suit for a second accident in May, according to local sources. British Columbia authorities had already arrested and charged the man for his alleged role in a fatal crash on April 5. The man is now facing further legal action in the form of a personal injury lawsuit pertaining to a May 22 car accident.

The woman suing him, a 28-year-old woman, has alleged that he was driving her vehicle with her consent on May 22 with her in the passenger seat when the accident occurred. She said he was intoxicated at the time of the crash but did not inform her of this before they got in the car. He was apparently driving erratically and at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the car, striking a rock and causing a rollover.

The woman claims she suffered injuries in the accident, including swelling, lacerations and a concussion. She is suing for personal injury in a civil court setting. The amount of damages she is seeking has not been made public as of this report.

In a case in which a police officer is killed in a car accident while on duty, that officer's family usually does not have the right to sue in a civil capacity. However, British Columbia law does allow the second woman to sue for personal injury as a private citizen. Her case must be supported by evidence from a police investigation in order for damages to be awarded in civil court, however.
