Woman killed in car accident that injures several others

A two-car crash on Highway 93/95 claimed the life of a woman from out of province, according to the RCMP. The British Columbia detachment responded to the car accident close to noon on Aug. 14. An indeterminate number of other people were injured in the crash, which is still under investigation by local and provincial authorities as of this report.

According to the report filed by the local detachment of the RCMP, two vehicles collided around 11:40 a.m. The details of the accident have not been released at this time, but police say they have an idea of which driver was responsible for the crash. The non-offending vehicle was carrying four individuals, while the other was carrying six. All 10 people were visitors from other provinces.

One woman, an Ontario resident in her late 50s, was pronounced dead after the accident. It appears all other passengers involved in the accident sustained serious injuries, but thankfully they do not appear to be life-threatening. STARS was called in to airlift passengers to nearby hospitals in Kelowna and Calgary. No charges have yet been filed against either driver.

Once British Columbia authorities determine which driver was responsible for the fatal car accident, they may choose to file criminal charges against that individual for his or her role in the crash. Even if no criminal charges are filed in this case, the family of the deceased woman and the other injured parties are entitled to file civil suits against the driver who materially contributed to the accident. Civil suits are handled separately from criminal charges and do not rely upon convictions or even charges being filed in order to succeed in civil court.
