British Columbia driver charged in fatal accident is sentenced

The father of a car accident victim feels cheated by the justice system after the driver responsible for his child's death received a comparatively light sentence, according to reports. British Columbia authorities sentenced a 64-year-old man to 15 months in prison for his role in a fatal accident that killed a 16-year-old boy two years ago. Thankfully, there are other options available to the family if they wish to pursue further action against him.

The accident report from the June 24 accident states that around 10:45, the 16-year-old boy was headed westbound on his motorcycle in in Surrey when a vehicle driven by the 64-year-old man suddenly turned left in front of him. The boy's motorcycle struck the rear passenger side of the vehicle, catapulting the rider into the street. He was rushed to a hospital with critical injuries, and he was later pronounced dead.

The driver involved apparently fled the scene, and he was later charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He pleaded guilty to this charge, and he was sentenced to 15 months in prison. The family of the deceased boy feels that justice did not prevail in this case, as the court proceedings took two years, and the sentence, they believe, does not fit the crime.

In fatal accident cases, it is not uncommon for the families of the deceased to feel as though more stringent punishment should have been applied by the courts. This is why British Columbia law allows these families to file wrongful death lawsuits against drivers involved in these accidents. Using evidence gathered in a police investigation, they can make their cases in civil court in an attempt to seek compensation for the damages they have suffered as a result of their tragic losses.
