1 dead in British Columbia car accident

One person is tragically dead following a serious car accident on Granville Island, according to local sources. The fatal car accident was reported to British Columbia authorities around 12:30 p.m. the afternoon of July 28. So far, police have not filed charges against the driver involved, who is apparently cooperating with the police investigation into the cause of the crash.

According to the accident report, an SUV driven by an unknown individual apparently crashed into a building on Granville Island. It is unclear what caused the driver of the SUV to lose control of the vehicle. However, the force of the impact was enough for a structural engineer to be called to the building to determine whether it was in danger of collapse.

One pedestrian who has not been publicly identified was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Two other pedestrians were apparently also injured, but their injuries were described as minor, and they were not taken to the hospital. No charges have yet to be filed against the driver, but the police investigation will continue until a cause for the crash can be determined.

British Columbia police will have the authority to charge the SUV driver involved in the fatal car accident should enough evidence be uncovered to suggest the driver contributed meaningfully to the crash. Even if no charges are filed, provincial law allows the family of the deceased individual to file a wrongful death suit against the driver in civil court. While evidence is still necessary, a criminal conviction is not required for the suit to succeed in court.
