Head-on car accident in British Columbia leaves 1 seriously hurt

Highway 10 was closed for some time while police investigated a head-on crash near Surrey, according to local sources. British Columbia-based RCMP officers were on the scene of the car accident that seriously injured a motorcyclist believed to be in his 30s. So far, they have not filed any charges against either operator involved in the crash, but their investigation is still underway.

The highway was closed for more than five hours starting the morning of July 13, from 11:00 a.m. to just after 4:00 p.m. According to the accident report, the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Highway 10 when he collided with a westbound minivan. The force of the impact was enough to split the motorcycle completely in half.

The motorcyclist was reportedly conscious when British Columbia Ambulance Service arrived on the scene, but he had suffered injuries described as "significant." He was subsequently airlifted to a hospital, where it is hoped he will make a full recovery. Neither the driver nor passenger in the minivan sustained injuries serious enough to require hospitalization. Police are unsure at this juncture which driver was responsible for the accident, but they are continuing to investigate.

If British Columbia authorities are able to determine that the driver of the minivan contributed meaningfully to the car accident, that individual could stand to face criminal charges. However, even if no charges are filed, it may still be possible for the motorcyclist to sue for personal injury. This would require evidence of culpability on the part of the minivan driver, even if that evidence is insufficient for a criminal charge.
