Drunk driving deaths rise in B.C. during the summer

In the summer there are many activities that residents of British Columbia engage in more than other times during the year. In addition to participating in seasonal activities such as boating and biking, more people get behind the wheel to drive after consuming alcoholic drinks. At least that is what can be assumed based on statistics. Close to half -- or 46 per cent -- of all deaths that are related to impaired driving in B.C., occur between the months of June and September. In addition, it is the third-leading cause of deaths on provincial roads throughout the summer. Only speeding and distracted driving cause more fatal crashes.

In response to these numbers, the police and ICBC have teamed up this summer to try to reduce the number of such incidents that occur. Specifically, police plan on implementing CounterAttack road checks throughout the province. That effort, which is designed to discourage impaired driving and take those off the road who are engaging in the activity-- is financially supported by ICBC which also funds two campaigns each year designed to educate the community.

While there are many other ways an intoxicated driver could get home--such as public transit, a taxi and designated drivers--inevitably some will continue to drink and drive. When the activity causes a serious accident that results in the loss of a loved one, it can be difficult to know which steps to take. Whether you are a resident of B.C. or visiting from across the border, a personal injury lawyer may be of assistance.
