Takata airbags still being installed

Last month we wrote about the expanded recall of defective air bags that had been installed in vehicles to make them safer. As we mentioned in that post, the issue is the force at which the bags inflate. The airbags themselves have been blamed for the deaths and injuries of many people. Recently, a report that many readers may find upsetting was in the news regarding the airbags being used in manufacture of some new vehicles.

A United States’ congressional report revealed several carmakers are still installing the air bags. While Volkswagen, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Fiat Chrysler admitted to the practice, it is possible the defective product could be installed in other vehicles as well. The reason for the continued use of the defective device is that with such a large recall, it is difficult to get replacement parts.

The activity is not illegal in the U.S. An order issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, makes it okay for vehicles with the Takata airbag to be sold, though they must be recalled by the end of 2018. While the practice may seem to not make sense, because in general, the issues with the airbags have not appeared until they have been exposed to a few years of humidity and heat exposure, the newer airbags are currently not considered to pose a risk to drivers.

This is the latest development in the Takata airbag recall. If the past is any indication there is likely more to come regarding the matter. We will continue to provide information regarding the matter as it becomes available.
